i was wondering...

why is yawning contagious?

was on the way home from school after math consultations in school with mr ng and peijun and this question popped into my head. i was looking out of the window and i caught sight of a man yawning. and inevitably, i yawned too. i know i am being real random here but i thought it would be interesting to find out (and probably take my mind off studying for awhile).

the contagious part of yawning is the least known about, that is, no one really knows why it is so. but, scientists say that contagious yawning is real and it's "probably programmed into us". Did you know that the action of a mouth opening is not what compels others to yawn? Studies have demonstrated that showing someone a photo of a wide-open mouth does not induce a yawn. holding a hand over the mouth while yawning doesn't prevent it from being contagious. hence, contagious yawns appear basically to be a visual response. Between 40 and 60 percent of people who watch videos or hear talk about yawning also end up doing the same!

"Researchers from the State University of New York in Albany tested people to find out why some are susceptible to contagious yawning and deduced that self-aware or empathetic people are more likely to catch yawns, according to the news service."

HAHAHAA. interesting. there are many theories that suggest the contagious nature of yawning but i guess, none of which is scientifically proven.
